BEROWRA & DISTRICT COMMUNITY
ASSOCIATION

INFORMATION RELEASE

Members of the Berowra and District Community Association (BDCA) have completed a survey in Berowra and districts of the local community needs. This came about because members of BDCA were very disappointed with the canceling for the Berowra pool and 'public consultation' relating to the proposed rate levy increases. Their goal was to find out if people of Berowra and district believed they needed the pool as well as other facilities.

The BDCA wish to thank the two hundred and six residents who took part in this survey and for their time and patience.

This study was undertaken by the BDCA volunteers so thanks to them also.

The peoples' views are clear. They need a 25 metre Indoor Pool at Berowra and a fair share of the resources and they are not happy paying a levy on their rates.

It is hoped Hornsby Council uses this information in a positive fashion and works with the community north of Hornsby to fulfil their needs.

If you can help or need more information, please contact someone from the names below:

BDCA Facility Survey Report May 2011

Finding Summary
Although there are some questions about some minor definitions of the data, the fact remains that on major points such as the Berowra pool and the levy the peoples' wishes and needs are clear. People interviewed were not led to answer leading or loaded questions or directed toward filtered answers as happened in some other push polling and bias surveys. The findings of this survey were compared to Hornsby Council's proposed list of facilities in its submission to IPART for a rate levy increase.

Some of the relevant findings are below:-

· Berowra and district people are generally happy with what they have, which is a lovely bush environment and community spirit, however traveling long distances to facilities, school and work is the downside.
· The Berowra library is used by nearly half the people in Berowra and is a much loved facility.
· Parks, ovals, community centres and halls, swimming and bush activities are very popular.
· Nearly one-third of the people use trains and others regularly use the medical centre, footpaths and buses.
· Children's playgrounds were well used and parents generally happy, however people felt there should be better play equipment at the Crossroads and there should be more facilities for youths and young people.
· There was strong support for a Swimming Pool in Berowra with two-thirds of the people identifying it as an urgent need. Yet the Berowra Pool was not mentioned as a future facility in Hornsby Council's Levy Report.
· Around half the residents identified Hornsby pool as an urgent need but there was little support for pedestrian bridge over George street Hornsby or recreation development in Old Mans Valley Hornsby
· Over two-thirds of the people are against paying a levy for infrastructure facilities and this contradicts Council's survey.
· A large percentage of the people question the council's decisions relating to Management and providing facilities in the comments section despite there being no question or reference relating to council competency or Management.
· There was no mentioned of horse riding or the Horse Riding Facilities at Galston.
· There was support for indoor sports centres and improved parking at Hornsby and Berowra train stations as well as needs for more paths and bike facilities and improved roads.

Introduction
The goal of BDCA survey was to identify the facility needs of the community particularly those living north of Hornsby and in Berowra. The goal was also to see if this survey findings correlated with Hornsby Council's survey's findings relating to facility needs.

Preliminaries
The data has been put in table format.
The data may be re-analysed at a later date to clarify some elements.
The demographics of this survey closely follow that of the Australian Beaureau of Statistics for Berowra.
Documentation was a mixture of self reporting and interviews of various groups and individuals.
Most people supplied their names however some wished to remain anonymous.
Subjects were chosen at random and targeted to meet general average population levels.
??????? Indicates the subject is noted and will be rechecked due to insufficient information at this time
